On Wednesday the 12th of April, it was an amazing time as members of our team with Taiwo from Lekki farm visited the Remand Boys Home on Birrell Avenue, Yaba, for Food Drive. Food Drive is one of our projects created in our quest to reach out and share love through feeding while contributing to the implementation of the second SDGs – No hunger.
The team arrived the home by 11 am. The boys who are currently on vacation ready to receive us were assembled in the hall where we addressed and interacted with them. We had them introduce themselves and talk about what they wanted to become as we also introduced ourselves (the @sociallyafrica team). After the group conversations and slight entertainment which we enjoyed together, we split them into groups. These groups were based on their proposed career path and each member of our team facilitated a group. An important factor was pictures could not be taken due to security reasons – protecting the kids, but that didn’t stop the flow.
The breakout sessions were really interesting because it made them a bit more comfortable to talk and express themselves. It unconsciously created a sense of belonging and identification that enabled the boys to become expressive with their ideas and aspirations. Just as the session went on, one of the boys said he wanted to become a professor and his role model is Chike Obi, another wanted to become a Surgeon and his role model is Benjamin Carson while one of them showed us his comic artworks.
In collaboration with Lekki farm, we gave out cooked meals and drinks to the boys and staffs at the remand home. The little act we hope could light up a smile. Our world would not be better than the act of love we surround ourselves with, and at Socially Africa, we hope that comes through.
